What it does

Exa is a web search engine built for AI agents and LLM apps rather than people. Developers call its APIs to search the web, pull clean page text and highlights, run multi-step research agents and set up recurring searches that post new results to a webhook. Exa runs its own crawler and an independent index of about 100 billion pages, plus structured collections such as companies, people, papers and local businesses. A hosted MCP server plugs the same search into Claude, Cursor, Codex and other AI tools. Exa 3.0, released on 19 October 2026, improved search quality and added the cheaper Lite search type. It is made by Exa Labs Inc.

Features

  • Search API with Lite, Auto and Deep modes. Web search returning results with page text and highlights. Lite (about 450 ms) suits cost-sensitive agent loops, Auto (about 1 s) spends more compute for quality, and Deep Search (4–40 s) runs multi-step research with structured outputs and citations. Searches can be focused on news, companies, research papers, people or financial data. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗ · Official source 3 ↗
  • Contents API and token-saving highlights. Returns clean text, highlights or summaries for any URL, including JavaScript-rendered pages and PDFs. Highlights pick only the relevant passages, which Exa says uses about 95% fewer tokens than full page text; with Exa 3.0 this is included at no extra charge. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Agent API for deep research and list building. An asynchronous research agent that enriches entities, builds large lists of companies or people and writes research reports with structured results and citations. You choose an effort level from minimal to xhigh for a fixed price per run, or let auto and ultra scale compute and bill by usage. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Monitors for recurring searches. Runs a saved search on a schedule (for example daily), drops results it has already returned and posts only new findings to your webhook. Useful for tracking news, competitors, funding rounds or new research. Official source 1 ↗
  • MCP server for AI coding tools and assistants. Adds Exa web search, code search, page reading and research to Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients, for example to look up current API docs and working code examples instead of relying on the model's training data. Official source 1 ↗
  • Own index with structured data. Exa crawls and indexes the web itself. Exa 3.0 added about 1.27 billion e-commerce listings and 211 million local businesses, plus real-time news, sports, weather, market data, flights and events, on top of people, company, code and publication data. Official source 1 ↗
  • Exa Connect third-party data providers. Agent runs can pull data from specialised providers such as Similarweb, Financial Datasets and Fiber.ai through one integration, with more (ZoomInfo, Crunchbase) on request. Provider calls are billed on top, and you can bring your own key. Official source 1 ↗

Best for & limitations

Giving a coding agent current documentation and code examples from GitHub, docs and Stack Overflow, so it writes code against today's APIs. Official source 1 ↗

Adding live web search to a chatbot or personal AI assistant, for example to answer questions about today's news. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

Building and enriching lists of companies or people for sales and go-to-market research, with structured fields and citations. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

Watching a topic such as competitor announcements or regulatory changes and getting new results pushed to a webhook every day. Official source 1 ↗

  • Built for developers, not a consumer search app. Exa is used through an API, SDKs or an MCP server; there is no end-user search app, so you need to build or connect an AI tool to use it. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Queries may be used to train models. The privacy policy says query data is used to improve Exa, including training and fine-tuning its models, and asks users not to put personal information in queries. Zero data retention is offered on Enterprise plans. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Costs scale with usage. Extra results, AI summaries, each Contents content type and third-party data providers are all billed on top of the base request price, and metered Agent runs can cost up to $5–20 each by default. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Rate limits on self-serve plans. Self-serve accounts are limited to 10 queries per second (25 after a $1,000 top-up) and 50 concurrent Agent runs; more requires a sales conversation. Official source 1 ↗
