The best AI tools to turn long videos into short clips

Six AI clipping tools compared on how they pick moments, what you can edit, where clips publish and what the free plans allow.

An AI clipper takes a podcast, webinar, interview or stream, finds the moments worth sharing and turns them into vertical shorts with captions. The tools in this list all do that much. They differ in how they choose moments, how much you can change afterwards, where the source video can come from and how far the free plan really goes.

Some are dedicated clippers that hand you a batch of finished shorts. Others are full editors where clipping is one feature among many. Pick the kind that matches how much editing you want to do yourself.

How we chose

  • How moments are chosenWhether the AI works only from speech or also from visuals, and whether you can steer it with a prompt, a topic or your own transcript selection.
  • Editing after the AI passWhether you can move clip boundaries, fix captions and adjust framing, and which plan unlocks that.
  • Source and destinationUploads versus links from YouTube or cloud storage, and whether clips can be published or scheduled directly to social accounts.
  • What the free plan really allowsWatermarks, export resolution, retention and whether the allowance renews each month or is used once.
  • Basis of judgementThese comparisons come from each vendor's official pricing pages, help centres and documentation, checked on the dates shown. We did not run the same test video through every tool.

The 6 picks

01

Best all-round AI clipper

OpusClip

AI clipping tool that turns long videos into captioned, reframed shorts and posts them to social platforms.

Pricing
Free plan with 60 credits a month and watermarked clips. Starter is $15 a month (monthly only) with 150 credits. Pro is $29 a month, or $14.50 a month billed annually ($174 a year), with 300 credits. Business pricing is custom.
Available on
Runs in the browser. Pro accepts links from YouTube, Google Drive, Vimeo, Zoom, Twitch, Loom, Riverside and other sources as well as uploads, and there is a video API and MCP connector.
Category
Video & Animation

OpusClip's ClipAnything model is described as working on any genre rather than only talking heads, and you can prompt it to find a specific moment. Reframing follows moving subjects, with manual tracking when the AI picks the wrong one.

Pro adds the features that matter once clipping becomes routine: a scheduler, several aspect ratios and XML export to a professional editor. The free plan is a preview. Clips carry a watermark, cannot be edited and stop being exportable after three days.

Choose it if
Creators who want the AI to clip any kind of video, from interviews to gaming and vlogs, and an optional handoff to Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
Look elsewhere if
You need to edit clips on the free plan, or want annual billing on the cheapest paid tier.
02

Best for marketing teams and webinars

Vizard

AI clipping editor that turns webinars, podcasts and interviews into captioned social clips.

Pricing
Free plan with 60 credits a month (1 credit = 1 minute of uploaded video). Creator is $29 a month or $14.50 a month billed yearly ($174). Business is $39 a month or $19.50 a month billed yearly ($234), plus $5 a month per extra team seat.
Available on
Runs in the browser. Videos can be uploaded or imported from YouTube, Google Drive, StreamYard and other sources, and every plan includes rate-limited API access.
Category
Video & Animation

Vizard pairs AI clipping with a text-and-timeline editor, caption translation into more than 100 languages and direct publishing to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and X. Sources can be imported from YouTube, Google Drive or StreamYard as well as uploaded.

Its free plan renews every month but exports at 720p, up to 10 minutes long, and keeps videos for three days. Team features such as the shared workspace and brand kit sit on Business, which charges extra per added seat.

Choose it if
Marketing teams turning webinars, events and product demos into on-brand social clips, including in other languages.
Look elsewhere if
You need a brand kit or shared projects without paying for the Business plan.
03

Best one-click clipper for talking videos

Klap

One-click AI clipper that turns long talking videos into captioned vertical shorts.

Pricing
You can create one video free. Paid plans are priced per clip allowance: Basic $14 a month for 100 clips, Pro $39 a month for 300 clips and Pro+ $94 a month for 1,000 clips, as listed with yearly billing. The API is billed separately by operation.
Available on
Runs in the browser; you upload a file or paste a YouTube link. A REST API accepts YouTube, S3, Google Cloud Storage and public video URLs and can embed the editor for managed users.
Category
Video & Animation

Klap is built around speech: it identifies topics in what is said, cuts them into clips and scores each one. AI Reframe 2 picks a layout per scene, including split screen, screencast and gaming layouts, and captions cover 52 languages.

Plans are sized by how many clips you generate rather than by minutes uploaded, every plan includes unlimited social accounts, and a usage-priced REST API is available for products that want clipping built in. The free try-out covers a single video.

Choose it if
Podcasters, educators and reviewers who want many ready-to-post clips from a speech-led video with very little manual work.
Look elsewhere if
Your footage has little dialogue, or you want an ongoing free plan.
04

Best when you also edit the full episode

Descript

Edit audio and video through text, with AI cleanup, generated media, captions and repurposing tools.

Pricing
Descript offers Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business and custom Enterprise tiers. Paid tiers meter media hours and AI credits separately.
Available on
Not yet verified
Category
Video & Animation

Descript is a full audio and video editor in which clipping is one step. You edit by deleting words from the transcript, clean up speech with Studio Sound and use the Underlord AI editor to tighten a recording before turning it into shorter clips.

That breadth is the reason to choose it, not raw clipping speed. Paid plans meter media hours and AI credits separately, and the free plan includes one media hour a month with 720p exports.

Choose it if
Podcasters and video creators who edit the whole recording by transcript and want clips to come out of the same project.
Look elsewhere if
All you want is a fast batch of shorts; a dedicated clipper gets there with fewer steps.
05

Best browser editor for collaborative teams

Kapwing

Collaborative online video editing with AI captions, dubbing, audio cleanup and repurposing.

Pricing
Free includes 10 credits and watermarked exports. Pro costs US$16 per member/month annually or US$24 monthly; Business costs US$50 annually or US$64 monthly. Enterprise has custom pricing.
Available on
Kapwing runs in the browser and supports editing and subtitling online.
Category
Video & Animation

Kapwing is a collaborative online editor. Members can edit the same project at the same time and leave comments, which suits teams that approve clips before posting. It repurposes a long video into social clips, removes silences with Smart Cut and translates subtitles into more than 60 languages.

Free exports are watermarked, limited to 720p and capped at four minutes per video, and free projects are viewable by anyone with the link.

Choose it if
Teams that review and caption clips together in the browser and resize the same content for several channels.
Look elsewhere if
You want unwatermarked free exports or videos longer than four minutes on the free plan.
06

Best for self-contained podcast and interview clips

Scribix

AI video clipper that finds self-contained moments in podcasts and interviews and turns them into vertical shorts.

Pricing
Priced by minutes of source video. Free includes a one-time 60 minutes. Starter is $29 a month for 600 minutes and Pro is $69 a month for 1,800 minutes, billed monthly; yearly billing is offered at a discount. Creating, editing and exporting clips does not use more minutes on paid plans.
Available on
Runs in the browser and takes local video uploads in common formats such as MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI and MKV. It does not import the original video from a YouTube link.
Category
Video & Animation

Scribix uses the spoken content and timing to suggest moments with enough context to stand on their own. On paid plans you can cut further clips from transcript text or exact times, adjust framing with automatic follow, fit or manual crop, restyle captions and publish to YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn with copy tailored per platform.

Its limits are specific. Sources must be uploaded from your device, each video gets one AI clipping pass, there is no split-screen layout, and free accounts can only export the suggested clips as they are. The free allowance is 60 minutes once, not monthly.

Choose it if
Podcasters and interviewers who care most that each clip makes sense to someone who missed the episode, and who want transcripts and post copy in the same place.
Look elsewhere if
You want to start from a YouTube link, need split-screen or screen-plus-speaker layouts, or expect to edit clips on the free plan.

Our take

If you only try one dedicated clipper, start with OpusClip or Vizard. Both renew a free allowance every month, so you can test them on real episodes before paying. Choose Klap when speed matters more than control, and Descript or Kapwing when clipping is part of a larger editing job.

Whichever you choose, review every suggested clip before posting. AI picks are a shortlist. Check that the clip keeps the speaker's meaning, that captions match the audio and that the vertical crop does not lose anyone.

Questions people ask

Which of these tools has a free plan that renews every month?

OpusClip and Vizard each give 60 credits a month, and Descript one media hour a month. Kapwing's free plan includes 10 credits with watermarked 720p exports. Klap's free try-out covers one video, and Scribix's free 60 minutes are a one-time allowance.

Can I clip a YouTube video without downloading it first?

Vizard and Klap accept YouTube links, and OpusClip accepts links from YouTube and other sources on Pro. Scribix needs a file uploaded from your device. A YouTube link there imports captions only.

Will the free clips have a watermark?

OpusClip and Kapwing state that free exports are watermarked. Vizard lists watermark removal as part of its paid Creator plan, and its free exports are limited to 720p. Scribix's free plan exports the original AI cuts without editing.

Which tools can post clips straight to social media?

OpusClip, Vizard, Klap and Scribix can publish to connected accounts. OpusClip and Vizard also schedule posts. Scribix publishes to YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn on paid plans only.
