Paid subscription after a short free period. The apps work for 3 days with a free account and no card; to keep dictating you start a 10-day trial with a card, then pay $6.90 USD a month or $69 USD a year. One subscription covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and both plans include the same app. There is no ongoing free plan: when the free days end, new dictation pauses until you start a trial or subscription. Available as
macOS on Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later) with macOS 13 or later; there is no Intel build. The website edition types into the active app using Accessibility permission. A separate Mac App Store edition cannot type into other apps, so it copies each dictation for you to paste, and it has its own subscription. · Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, with a native version for Arm PCs. It installs for the current user without administrator rights, and one subscription covers both Mac and Windows computers. · iPhone (iOS 17 or later, installed through Apple's TestFlight) and Android (Android 10 or later, downloaded from outside Google Play) get a Yap keyboard for dictating in any app, covered by the same subscription. · A separate free Yap Voice Typing browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge types into text boxes on web pages. At the check date it was still in store review for Chrome and Firefox and listed as coming soon for Edge. What it does

Yap is a hold-to-talk dictation app for Mac and Windows, with a Yap keyboard for iPhone and Android. Hold a shortcut (Fn on a Mac, Ctrl + Win on Windows), speak and release, and Yap types the text at the cursor in the app you are using: an email, a chat, a document, an AI chat or a terminal. Speech recognition runs on the device, so recordings are not uploaded, and built-in cleanup removes hesitation sounds and adds punctuation. Yap is made by O-mega Enterprise Inc.

Features

  • Hold-to-talk dictation into any app. Place the cursor, hold the shortcut, speak and release; the text is typed where you were writing. For longer thoughts, recording can be locked hands-free and finished with a second press, and Esc cancels. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • On-device speech recognition. Recordings are transcribed on the computer and not uploaded. On Windows, Yap uses NVIDIA's Parakeet model on the PC's processor, a one-time download of about 0.7 GB; on a Mac the speech models are a one-time download of about 1.4 GB, after which dictation works offline. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗ · Official source 3 ↗
  • Automatic language detection. Each recording is recognized in the language spoken, with no language switching, across 25 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Croatian, Slovenian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek and Maltese. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Cleanup and punctuation. Built-in cleanup removes hesitation sounds while keeping your wording, and punctuation is added automatically; spoken punctuation such as "new paragraph" can be turned on in settings. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Local history without clipboard changes. Completed text is kept in a local History where it can be copied or deleted, and it is not synced to Yap's servers. Automatic insertion does not change the clipboard. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Guarded typing on Windows. Yap types only into the app that was in front when recording started and stops if you switch apps, open a menu or reach a password field. Programs running as administrator cannot receive typed text, so those dictations stay in History. Official source 1 ↗
  • Voice input for terminals and coding agents. Yap types into any terminal, editor or coding agent, including over SSH, and names Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and VS Code. Official source 1 ↗
  • Custom shortcuts and signed updates. Both plans include custom shortcuts, hands-free recording and automatic updates; on Windows each update is checked against Yap's signature before it installs. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Browser demo before installing. A website demo runs a smaller speech model in the browser so you can test local recognition without installing; it is English-only, up to 60 seconds, and not representative of the full app's speed or quality. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

Pricing & free limits

Billing details

Plans renew automatically and the first charge is made when the 10-day trial ends; cancelling before then avoids any charge. Cancelling keeps access to the end of the current period, and signing out or deleting the app does not cancel billing. Official source 1 ↗

Website subscriptions are processed by Stripe for O-mega Enterprise Inc., and payments are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. Official source 1 ↗

The Mac App Store edition is a separate subscription sold and billed by Apple; its trial, price and renewal terms are shown in the app, and refunds are requested from Apple. Official source 1 ↗

Each account has an invite link: a new subscriber who joins through it gets a 30-day trial instead of 10 days, and the inviter receives a $6.90 credit when that person starts paying. Official source 1 ↗

Free access & limits

The website apps can be used free for 3 days after creating an account with an email address and no payment details. Each account can start free days once, and Yap may limit how many accounts start free days from the same network. Official source 1 ↗

The browser demo needs no download or account but is limited to English and 60 seconds per recording. Official source 1 ↗

The separate Yap Voice Typing browser extension is free with no account and unlimited recordings of up to 2 minutes each, but it only types into web pages. Official source 1 ↗

Best for & limitations

Answering long emails and replying in Slack, Teams or WhatsApp by speaking instead of typing. Official source 1 ↗

Speaking detailed prompts to ChatGPT or Claude, or talking through a task for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or a terminal without sending audio or code to a server. Official source 1 ↗

Dictating on a Mac without uploading audio, including offline for up to 24 hours after the last access check. Official source 1 ↗

Giving your hands a rest from the keyboard because of wrist pain, RSI or long days of typing. Official source 1 ↗

Writing in several European languages without switching settings, since each recording is recognized in the language spoken. Official source 1 ↗

  • Needs periodic internet access checks. Recognition is local, but the first launch, activation and periodic access checks need internet. Offline use lasts up to 24 hours after a successful check, so Yap is not suitable for a permanently disconnected computer. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • No ongoing free plan; card needed after 3 days. After the 3 free days, continued dictation needs a 10-day trial started with a payment card, then a paid plan. Official source 1 ↗
  • Apple silicon Macs only. The Mac app requires an M1 or later Mac; there is no Intel build. Official source 1 ↗
  • Windows installer is not code-signed. Windows may warn "Windows protected your PC" and the installer must be run through More info, then Run anyway. Official source 1 ↗
  • Phone apps are outside the main app stores. The iPhone app installs through Apple's TestFlight, and the Android app on the download page is installed from outside Google Play. Official source 1 ↗
  • Desktop recognition limited to 25 European languages. The listed languages are all European; languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Hindi or Arabic are not on the list. Official source 1 ↗
