The OpenBot code is free under the MIT license, but there is no hosted version to sign up for. Running it needs a CopilotKit Intelligence project and your own model API key. Intelligence has a free hosted plan with 1,000 interactions per organization each month, and a free Developer Edition for local, non-production use. Pay as you go costs $49 a month for the first 10,000 interactions, and Annual is custom priced. CopilotKit also sells engineering help to set it up for you. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

What it does

OpenBot is an open-source agent workspace from CopilotKit that a company clones and runs on its own infrastructure. Employees message AI agents in channels, the way they would message colleagues. Agents answer from company documents in Google Drive and OneDrive, with permissions enforced and sources cited. Each agent can get its own computer, with a signed-in browser and shell, and people can watch the screen and take over. Any agent that speaks CopilotKit's AG-UI protocol can join. It is not the Intel OpenBot robot project or the openbot.run desktop app.

Features

  • Channels for agents. Every agent gets its own channel with full history, and exposes only the skills it has been granted on a slash command in the composer. Two or more agents can share a group conversation. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Company knowledge with permissions. Agents answer from Google Drive and OneDrive with the source documents named. Retrieval fails closed: an agent only sees files the person asking can already open, and returns nothing when permissions are unclear. Official source 1 ↗
  • A computer per agent. Each agent can get its own container with files, a signed-in browser and a shell. When a tool has no API, the agent signs in and drives the interface while you watch the screen beside the chat, and you can take the wheel mid-task, for example at a login wall or 2FA prompt. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Policy gateway and audit trail. Every browser, file, shell and MCP action goes through one gateway that checks it against admin rules, written in CEL and failing closed, before it runs. Sensitive MCP calls need a per-tool allowlist, and an audit page lists what was permitted, refused or failed, with the rule that caused each refusal. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Bring your own agents and models. Any AG-UI endpoint becomes an agent, whether built with LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, Google ADK or by hand. No model ships in the box: admins add provider keys, which are encrypted at rest and never logged. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Connected apps, skills and routines. Google Drive, Notion and web research providers ship in the MCP catalogue, and Composio brokers a few hundred more apps. Admins and users write skills invoked with a slash, and an agent can be asked to repeat a task on a schedule, with a 15-minute floor and a cap of 20 routines. Official source 1 ↗
  • Company sign-in. Sign-in works with Google, Microsoft or Okta, or a company's own SAML or OpenID Connect provider, and admins can promote, demote and remove people. Official source 1 ↗

An interaction is one successfully completed agent request, including all the model, tool and sub-agent calls needed for it; failed requests and non-production usage are not charged. Model costs are separate, because you bring your own provider key. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

Free access & limits

Free hosted Intelligence includes 1,000 interactions per organization each month. The local Developer Edition is for non-production use only, and its license lasts 30 days and can be renewed. Official source 1 ↗

Best for & limitations

Asking a company-knowledge agent which deck holds the Q3 renewal numbers and getting an answer that cites the Drive documents behind it. Official source 1 ↗

Having an agent sign in to an internal back office with no API, filter accounts by owner and post the list to a channel while you watch. Official source 1 ↗

Giving employees role-based agents such as a read-only warehouse analyst, an inbox triage assistant or an onboarding buddy that answers from the handbook. Official source 1 ↗

  • A template, not a hosted product. There is no OpenBot service to sign up for. A team has to clone, configure and run it, with Docker, Bun, a CopilotKit Intelligence project and a model key. Official source 1 ↗
  • Alpha software. CopilotKit describes OpenBot as early and under active development, with rough edges and bugs. Official source 1 ↗
  • Depends on paid CopilotKit Intelligence at scale. Durable threads and memory run through CopilotKit Intelligence. The free hosted tier stops at 1,000 interactions a month, and the free local edition is non-production only. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Single-user mode by default. A fresh clone admits every request as one administrator until sign-in is configured, so it must not be exposed to others before setting up an identity provider. Official source 1 ↗
