What it does

Trigger.dev is an open source platform from API Hero Ltd. for building and running durable AI agents and background workflows in TypeScript. You write tasks and agents in your own codebase, and they run on Trigger.dev Cloud, or on your own infrastructure, with retries, queues, waits, tracing and elastic scaling. There is no execution timeout. Its chat.agent keeps each AI conversation as one durable task that survives refreshes, deploys and crashes.

Features

  • Durable chat agents. A chat.agent runs each conversation as one durable task that idles between turns and survives refreshes, deploys and crashes. The frontend connects with the AI SDK's useChat, with no API routes to write. Official source 1 ↗
  • Human in the loop. Pause a tool call for approval and resume when a person decides, keeping the run alive while it waits. Official source 1 ↗
  • Slack and Linear agents. Turn an agent into a native Slack agent, or assign Linear issues to an agent. Official source 1 ↗
  • Long-running tasks. Runs have no maximum duration. Waiting runs and parent tasks waiting on subtasks are checkpointed and don't use compute. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Webhooks and schedules. Hosted, verified webhook endpoints for Stripe, GitHub and more start tasks and agents, and cron schedules run tasks with timezone support. Official source 1 ↗
  • Realtime and observability. Stream run status and LLM output to your frontend with React hooks. AI observability shows every model step and tool call with tokens, cost and latency, and alerts go to email, Slack or webhooks. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Queues, versions and build control. Control concurrency globally or per tenant. Each deploy is an atomic version, and build extensions add Python, FFmpeg, Puppeteer and system packages. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Set up with AI coding assistants. An MCP server, Skills and rules help Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf write Trigger.dev code, and a setup prompt bootstraps a project. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
