What it does

Reason Machines (Ara Software, Inc.) makes Reason, a coding agent you use from the web, a desktop app for macOS and Linux, a mobile app, or the reason CLI. A Session thinks in Reason's cloud and runs its commands either on your own computer, with your files and permissions, or on a Reason cloud computer. Its free Reason Network links Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Cursor and Reason sessions across your and your teammates' computers so they can message each other and hand off work. It is not related to the Reason music production software.

Features

  • Runs on your computer or in the cloud. By default a CLI run works in the current folder on your machine with your permissions; --cloud sends it to a Reason cloud computer, and sessions keep going after the terminal closes. Official source 1 ↗
  • Desktop app with computer and browser use. The native macOS and Linux app runs the local worker and sets up desktop, computer-use and browser-use components; on macOS sessions can also drive your own Chrome. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
  • Reason Network. A free peer-to-peer network where Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Cursor, Pi and Reason sessions on your and your friends' computers see each other, ask questions and hand off work, with end-to-end encrypted messages. Official source 1 ↗
  • Serve an agent to your team. reason network serve puts a headless Claude Code, Grok or Codex in a folder on the network, where it takes requests from any agent or person and replies with the result. Official source 1 ↗
  • Bring your own models. Pro and Max accept ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot and Grok sign-ins, API keys, gateways and custom endpoints alongside Reason's own frontier model. Official source 1 ↗
  • Editor and agent integrations. reason acp runs Reason as the agent inside ACP editors such as Zed or JetBrains, and reason mcp connects other coding agents over MCP. Official source 1 ↗

Best for & limitations

Keeping a coding task moving when Claude Code or Codex hits its usage limit, using the plans you already pay for. Official source 1 ↗

Letting the Claude Code, Codex and Cursor sessions on several teammates' computers ask each other questions and pass work along. Official source 1 ↗

Starting a long or parallel task on a cloud computer from the CLI or phone and checking on it later. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗

  • No free plan for the agent. Without a plan or purchased credits you can only read your sessions; the old Free with ads plan is no longer offered. Official source 1 ↗
