Underdog

Underdog is a personal AI from Conway Research that runs on your own computer. It handles email, calendar, meeting notes, dictation and chat with Underdog’s own on-device models, and a browser agent runs errands in your browser, asking before it buys, pays, sends or deletes anything. Mail syncs directly with Google or Microsoft, and Underdog says your content is never sent to a cloud AI service. It is free, invite only, and needs a Mac with Apple silicon; Windows is in beta, with iPhone, Android and Linux announced as coming. This profile is based on official pages, not hands-on testing.

Best for

  • People who want an AI assistant for email and calendar without sending their mail to a cloud AI
  • Recording and summarizing meetings with audio that never leaves the computer
  • Trying a free personal agent on a Mac with Apple silicon

Not the best fit for

  • Anyone without an invite: access is currently invite only
  • Phone-first users: iPhone and Android apps are announced but not yet available
  • Hard reasoning tasks that need the largest cloud models; local models trade some capability for privacy

How it runs
Runs on your computer: Underdog's own models (Woof 4B, Saluki 27B, Underdog 27B) handle summaries, drafts, chat and transcription locally; mail syncs directly between your computer and Google or Microsoft. Local MCP and a custom dictation server are optional
What it can do
email triage and drafts, calendar, meeting recording and notes, system-wide dictation, chat; a browser agent runs errands in your own browser and prepares sensitive tasks (doctor's appointments, prescription refills, tax paperwork) for your approval
Asks before acting
The browser agent asks before it buys, pays, sends or deletes anything and fills saved passwords without reading them. Mail, calendar and saved logins are encrypted on disk with a device-only key. Naval mode limits network traffic to the servers it needs. Passed an App Defense Alliance CASA Level 1 assessment (Leviathan Security Group, Sep 2026); Google approved its Gmail and Calendar access
Training on your data
Your content is processed on your device and not sent to any cloud AI service. Underdog's servers hold your account email, membership, an optional daily usage count (no content) and crash reports only if you send them
Model
Underdog's own on-device models: Woof 4B, Saluki 27B and Underdog 27B (built on Qwen 3.8 27B)

FAQ

Is Underdog free?

Yes. Underdog’s pricing page says it is free because the AI runs on your own computer, so there is nothing to bill. Its terms add that if this ever changes, users will be told clearly before anyone is charged. Access currently needs an invite; without one you can join the waiting list on underdog.ai.

What can Underdog do?

It triages and drafts email, manages your calendar, records and summarizes meetings, types dictation into other apps and answers in chat. A browser agent works in your own browser for errands, and for sensitive tasks such as doctor’s appointments, prescription refills or tax paperwork it finds what is needed and prepares the next step for your approval.

Which devices does Underdog run on?

A Mac with Apple silicon, and a Windows PC in beta. Underdog says iPhone, iPad, Android and Linux versions are on the way and offers an email alert per platform. Mail and calendar connect through your own Google or Microsoft account.

Does Underdog send my data to the cloud?

Underdog says no AI processing happens in the cloud: its own models (Woof 4B, Saluki 27B and Underdog 27B, built on Qwen 3.8 27B) run on your computer, and it uses no third-party AI provider. Mail syncs directly between your computer and Google or Microsoft. Its servers hold your account email and membership, an optional daily usage count that contains no content, and crash reports only if you choose to send one.

Will Underdog act without asking me?

Underdog says the browser agent asks before it buys, pays, sends or deletes anything, and fills saved passwords without reading them. Its terms note that what the browser agent does in your browser counts as you doing it and that AI output can be wrong, so check drafts and bookings before you approve them.

Has Underdog’s security been checked?

Underdog’s security page lists a passed App Defense Alliance CASA Level 1 assessment by Leviathan Security Group (September 2026) and Google’s restricted-scope approval for Gmail and Calendar access. A penetration test and an independent teardown of the Mac app were still under way when this page was checked. Naval mode limits the app to the servers it needs, such as your mail provider.
