What it does
Puzzle is web-based accounting software from Puzzle Financial Inc. aimed at startups, small businesses and accounting firms. AI agents categorise transactions, run reconciliations and draft financial statements on Puzzle's own general ledger, while users review and approve before anything posts. It connects to finance tools such as Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp and Gusto, and can be bought as software only or bundled with a vetted partner bookkeeper who closes the books each month.

- AI categorisation and reconciliation. AI agents categorise transactions from day one and handle reconciliation; Puzzle advertises up to 98% automated categorisation with no rules to write. These are vendor figures. Official source 1 ↗
- AI Suite: Chat, Cowork and Close. Chat answers questions about the business in plain English, such as cash trends. Cowork takes on described tasks, such as matching invoices to payments or finding subscriptions, and the user reviews the result before it is final. AI Close handles the repetitive month-end close steps. Official source 1 ↗
- Reviewable AI actions. Puzzle calls its approach Governed Automation: every automated action is traceable, reviewable and editable before financial statements are finalised. Official source 1 ↗
- Real-time startup metrics. Cash, burn, runway and revenue recognition update continuously rather than at month-end. Burn is calculated from net cash outflow and runway as current cash divided by average burn. Official source 1 ↗
- Cash and accrual books. Cash and accrual accounting run from the same ledger, so a startup can manage runway on a cash view and produce accrual financials for investors. Product pages also list accrual automation, revenue recognition and invoicing. Official source 1 ↗
- Native finance integrations. Direct integrations with banking, cards and expenses, payments and payroll tools convert their transaction data into general ledger entries. Listed integrations include Mercury, Meow, Gusto, Deel, Rippling, Central, Stripe, Bill.com, Ramp and Brex. Puzzle says its data integrations are read-only. - QuickBooks import. History can be imported automatically from QuickBooks during onboarding; a paid migration add-on moves books from QuickBooks, Xero or other systems. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
- Multi-client workspaces for bookkeepers. Bookkeepers can manage multiple clients, each with separate ledgers, integrations and reporting environments. Official source 1 ↗

Best for & limitations
An early-stage founder keeps books current and tracks cash, burn and runway without a finance team, and has statements ready for investor due diligence. Official source 1 ↗
A startup moving off QuickBooks imports its history, connects Stripe, Ramp, Brex or Mercury, and shortens month-end close by having categorisation and reconciliations drafted during the month. Official source 1 ↗
A bookkeeping firm runs many high-transaction clients in separate environments with standardised workflows and exception-based review. Official source 1 ↗
A fintech or SaaS platform embeds accounting through the API, recording revenue and expenses automatically and showing cash flow, burn and runway inside its own product. Official source 1 ↗
- AI credits are capped. Starter and Core include 25 lifetime AI credits; Complete includes 100 and Scale 300 AI credits per month. Official source 1 ↗
- Key features gated to higher plans. AI accuracy review, AI reconciliations and revenue recognition start on Complete; subledgers and removal of transaction and integration limits come with Scale. Starter is limited to one seat and Core to five. Official source 1 ↗
- Best fit with supported modern finance tools. Puzzle says it is especially suited to companies using tools like Stripe, Ramp, Brex and Mercury; the close-time guarantee excludes CSV uploads, PDF uploads and unsupported integrations. Official source 1 ↗ · Official source 2 ↗
- Expert Reviewed service has narrow eligibility. The lower-cost bundled bookkeeping service is limited to businesses with up to $10K in monthly expenses, one entity and accounting basis, and no payroll processing, AP/AR or inventory. Official source 1 ↗
- API not yet open to individual companies. Embedded accounting via the API is for tech platforms and accounting firms; individual companies must join a waitlist. Official source 1 ↗
- Data hosted in the US. Puzzle states that information is safeguarded on its US servers. Official source 1 ↗
- Accountant review still recommended as companies grow. Puzzle says it does not replace an accountant and that growing startups often still have an accountant review numbers before sharing them with investors or the IRS. Official source 1 ↗
